Demonstration of Capability to Provide Essential Grid Services
This report highlights results from a series of tests performed on a wind farm in the California Independent System Operator (CAISO) territory. The results show that the wind farm, equipped with advance inverter controls, was able to coordinate individual wind turbines to respond to signals as a single plant to provide essential reliability services. These services are crucial for ensuring the reliable operation of the power system, and have been traditionally provided by conventional generators with inertia and governor controls. The tests show inverter-based systems such as wind and solar can also contribute to power system reliability, which will be critical as power systems continue to add increasing amounts of these generators.
