New Resource: Eastern Renewable Generation Integration Study
This recent study from the National Renewable Energy Laboratory uses cutting-edge modeling tools and data to show how the power grid of the Eastern Interconnection, one of the largest power systems in the world, can accommodate up to 30% wind and solar in the power mix. The study examines four potential scenarios of wind and solar power development in the United States. A key result indicates that integrating up to 30% variable wind and solar generation is technically feasible, but would likely require increased balancing area cooperation, incentives for transmission and generation to provide ancillary services, and increased flexibility of traditional generation resources.
